Oral cancer screenings can be conducted during your regular checkup or in a separate appointment. They are especially important if you have risk factors such as tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, sun exposure, or a history of cancer. The dentist will conduct a visual survey of your mouth and may also feel the tissues with a gloved hand. More in-depth tests include rinsing your mouth with a blue dye and using a special light to identify abnormal tissue. The dentist can also advise you if any follow-up is required.
