There are several signs that a person needs to go to the dentist. However, most people ignore these signs until they have teeth that are in such bad shape that they cannot be easily helped. It is vital that once you start to experience an issue with your teeth that you act and make an
appointment promptly, as this could save your tooth.
Pain and Inflammation
Pain in the tooth or gum is the most popular reason for going to the dentist. In many cases, the pain is due to inflammation in the gums resulting from gingivitis or periodontitis. Though you can try at home remedies to ease the pain until you see the dentist, do not put off the dentist, as these conditions could result in losing the tooth. Even for those who have pain that is in the form of a headache may find that their dentist can help. Surprisingly, many headaches are due to problems with the teeth, but most people do not connect the dots on these two issues.
Speckled White Teeth
Many people may notice their teeth start to look as though they have white speckles on them. Though most people dismiss this, it is not something to be shrugged away. This is a sign that the tooth is decaying and the enamel is wearing down. If caught early enough, your tooth can be saved.
Intense Sensitivity to Foods
Many times when a person eats a hot or cold item, they have intense pain that starts in their tooth then dissipates as it radiates throughout the mouth. If this discomfort is a bother, consider seeing a dentist to determine whether you need to start a regimen for sensitive teeth, or you have an issue with cavities being present. Both issues can cause the pain that is felt to hot and cold temperatures.
Feel and Color of your Mouth
There are several times in which the color of your mouth, along with how this feels can be a good indicator that something is wrong. When brushing your teeth look at your mouth and notice if there is anything different, such as the color of the cheeks, gums, tongue or the roof of the mouth. Sometimes, when there are numerous bacteria present, the mouth color changes. This is a good indication that it is time to see a dentist.
In addition, your mouth should be moist, and if it suddenly goes dry, it can be a sign that you may need to see a dentist. There are several reasons for dry mouth, such as certain reactions to medications, depending on the patient. However, if the feel your mouth changes significantly over a short period of time, this could indicate a bigger issue.
How is Your Breath?
Bad breath is not only embarrassing, but can also be a sign that there is something wrong, such as gingivitis. If you find that after brushing, flossing and using mouth wash that the bad breath is still there, it is time to see an expert. The dentist can determine what the issue is and help with getting this under control.
If you ever have a metallic taste in your mouth, as though you have been sucking on pennies, then see a dentist, as this is not normal. This can be a sign that you are developing gingivitis and/or periodontitis. If these are caught earlier, you do have a better chance of preventing any long term effects.
Going to a dentist routinely is ideal, but when you notice these types of issues arising, it is time to make an appointment to be seen, as these issues can be indicative of something more serious.
